We're from Bakersfield, but I instantly transported to Germany! I can't get enough of this bakery. I love everything about it: the ambiance, the gift shop, the decor, the food & the pastries! When we travel through the 58 we always have to come here. We usually get the eclairs (such as big size! So worth it!), the cream puffs, & pies!
The sandwiches were good (they were very heavy on the mayo) and the pastries decent. The sourdough sandwich bread and cinnamon roll were the stars of the order. We have had better and much worse. The variety was good. We stopped on a road trip and was there before 7am. It took 30-40 minutes for our order to be completed. Staff was ok, one friendly guy at the counter, the others didn't crack a smile. A couple locals came in after us, placed orders and were bumped ahead of our order... I can tell it is a great place to order for companies. One guy ordered a dozen different sandwiches to go. It's a solid 3.75 and I rounded up to 4. It is a quaint stop but not necessarily one I would repeat unless I was actually staying in town.
Kohnen's is a dream bakery! If you have a sweet tooth, it's a must to get to Kohnen's! It was recommended by a family member to check it out and based on the incredibly long line, we knew it was a great rec! That have amazing pastries and they definitely sell out! They also offer delicious sandwiches and soups/salads. I was going to ask what the soup of the day was but got distracted by the sweets and ordered an almond Danish instead! It was delectable! My husband got a reuben sandwich and shared some bites with me. It was the best Reuben I've ever had! It was such a yummy spot that we stopped again today for breakfast (and cheesecakes)! Love love this bakery!! A must when you're in Tehachapi!!
What I really love about this bakery is that everyone is nice & friendly. I was there today to get some bread and a slice of cake. I ordered the soup with my sandwich and it was creamy chicken and dumplings soup, so delicious. I am very appreciative of this Bäckerei and I will keep coming back. Das ist gut! Dankeschön.
I didn't realize I have never left a review of this amazing place. On weekends bring patience becuase this gem can be packed. Yoy have your choice of fresh baked breads for sandwiches or to take home (who are we kidding Both!). The desserts are always on pint they are always oversized and nit too sweet. You grab the sandwich form and create your perfect sandwich. You can eat there are take it to go. Really a great spot.
I love this place! Fresh bread, desserts and sandwiches made to order! The price is great and the decor and ambiance is also so cute! I wish this place was closer to my home as I would be a regular customer. The Reuben sandwich was super tasty (best I had) along with the expresso chocolate chip. The basque cheesecake and roast beef sando is awesome as well. I definitely recommend when you are in town.
There's not enough words for how good this place is! We broke down in Keene and spent the night at a motel in Tehachapi, and after checkout we decided to explore a little. The service was fantastic! A very sweet lady helped us choose an assortment of pastries and I bought a "Sour Kraut" coffee cup for my angry German Mutter. We sat outside at one of the tables to enjoy our snacks and enjoyed a refreshing glass of ice water from the dispenser. I'm very disappointed however...that they're not closer to my home I'm dying to come back but I live in Mendocino. We will definitely be making a trip back at some point! I also am looking forward to sending my neighbor here--his parents owned a bakery in Germany when he was a child and I think he's going to love it.
This my favorite place in Tehachapi. Every turn we come, I have to stop off here and get fresh pastries and sandwiches. Today we got a roast beef and turkey sandwich. Both were excellent. I think it's due to the thin cut onions, lettuce, cheese abs meat. Everything feels delicate including the homemade bread. We got the sourdough and the Sheepherders. The place is cute and quaint and always clean, plus the servers are friendly and helpful. Highly recommend.
Do not miss the chance to stop at Kohnen's on your road trip! It is worth the side quest to get here! It's nestled in this cute historic town of Tehachapi which is easy to get to from the 58. Parking is easy with a lot right next door. We came on a Sunday at lunch time and waited in line for 5 minutes. There are tons of German imports such as pickles, pasta, beers, and the bakery display is vast. We got a salad and the Poor Boy, two pastries, pickles, noodles, and 2 drinks. The poor boy was absolutely delicious - we were hungry and still only ate half of it. The salad was also very large and the quality of fresh greens and portion of veggies was beyond what we expected. It's a super cool spot to sit on the patio and see the hikers from the PCT come by.
